Spring 2027 Application

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in joining the Penn State Undergraduate Law Review (ULR) as either a Long-Form Writer, Short-Form Writer, or a Long-Form Editor!

Applications close December 1st at 11:59 PM

Participation in ULR is a one-semester commitment that requires strong time management, attention to detail, and a dedication to academic excellence. Whether serving as a long-form writer, short-form writer, or long-form editor, members play a critical role in maintaining the quality and integrity of the publication.

Long-Form Writers

Long-Form Writers are expected to produce one publishable law review article per semester, typically between 10 and 20 pages in length. This process requires extensive legal research, thoughtful analysis, and the ability to incorporate editorial feedback throughout the semester. Because publication deadlines are strict and our editorial process is rigorous, writers must be prepared to meet all assigned deadlines and respond promptly to feedback from editors.

Short-Form Writers

Short-Form Writers are expected to create blog post-style work every two weeks. You will be writing between 600 and 1,500 words about any current event or policy that interests you. This process requires extensive current event knowledge, thoughtful analysis, and the ability to produce work in a timely manner. This role requires writers to stay informed and up-to-date on current events and offer thoughtful analysis about the potential effects of these events.

Long-Form Editors

Long-Form Editors work closely with writers to strengthen articles through substantive and technical editing. Editors review drafts for clarity, organization, argumentation, citation accuracy, and adherence to publication standards. Editors are expected to provide constructive feedback, communicate effectively with writers, and ensure that all articles meet ULR’s expectations for publication.

Requirements

No prior law review experience is required for any position. However, all members must be willing to learn and use Bluebook citation format, which is mandatory for publication. ULR is a research-intensive organization, and successful members are curious, self-motivated, collaborative, and committed to producing high-quality scholarship.

Member Benefits

As a member of ULR, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a published academic journal while developing valuable legal research, writing, editing, and analytical skills. Members also have access to research seminars, Bluebook citation workshops, coffee talks, collaborative workdays, and other professional development opportunities hosted by the Board of Directors.

Reapplying

To maintain the quality and integrity of the Undergraduate Law Review, positions are granted on a semester-by-semester basis. Current members must reapply each semester and demonstrate continued commitment to the standards of the publication.
